Michael Vosbein: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Passion for Cymbals

In the world of percussion, few names resonate as strongly as Michael Vosbein. A lifelong drummer, educator, and entrepreneur, Vosbein’s journey is a testament to dedication, craftsmanship, and an unwavering love for music. His role as the president of Bosphorus Cymbals USA has helped bridge centuries-old Turkish cymbal-making traditions with modern musicians around the world.

A Passion Born in New Orleans

Born and raised in the heartland of American jazz, New Orleans, Michael Vosbein discovered his passion for drums at the young age of 11. A chance encounter with a relative’s drum kit ignited a lifelong journey into the world of percussion. From high school bands to professional performances, his talent and dedication took him to the University of North Texas and the University of Miami—two institutions renowned for their music programs.

His career took off when he toured North America with the legendary Glenn Miller Orchestra, honing his skills as a performing musician. Moving to Los Angeles in the 1980s, he studied under jazz greats, including his mentor Jeff Hamilton, before eventually teaching at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. Throughout his journey, Vosbein never lost sight of his deep appreciation for sound quality and musical craftsmanship.

    The Bosphorus Cymbals Revolution

Vosbein’s passion for cymbals led him to Bosphorus Cymbals, a brand steeped in Turkish tradition. Founded by master craftsmen Hasan Seker, Hasan Ozdemir, and Ibrahim Yakici, Bosphorus Cymbals embodies centuries-old techniques that date back to the Ottoman Empire. These artisans, committed to handcrafting each cymbal, ensure that every piece carries a unique musical signature.

Recognizing the artistry behind Bosphorus, Vosbein became president of Bosphorus Cymbals USA, bringing the brand to the North American market. His mission was clear: to preserve the integrity of handmade cymbals in an industry that was increasingly shifting toward mass production.

Keeping Tradition Alive in a Modern World

Unlike machine-made cymbals, Bosphorus cymbals maintain a warm, rich tone that evolves with time. Every cymbal undergoes a meticulous handcrafting process, receiving over 5,000 hammer strikes before completion. Vosbein and his team of musician-executives ensure that only the finest cymbals make it to market—if a cymbal doesn’t meet the standard, it’s sent back to Turkey to be melted and remade.

Under Vosbein’s leadership, Bosphorus has introduced a variety of signature series, including collaborations with top drummers like Jeff Hamilton, Ignacio Berroa, and Stanton Moore. These cymbals are embraced by a diverse range of artists across jazz, rock, pop, and beyond, further cementing Bosphorus’ reputation as the premier choice for musicians who value authenticity and quality.

A Drummer First, a Businessman Second

Despite his executive responsibilities, Vosbein remains an active musician. Whether performing gigs, testing new cymbals, or engaging with fellow drummers, his hands-on approach ensures that Bosphorus remains deeply connected to the musical community. “The instrument you play has an effect on how you play,” he says, emphasizing how Bosphorus cymbals inspire drummers to listen more, explore deeper, and express themselves fully.

The Future of Bosphorus and Vosbein’s Legacy

With Bosphorus Cymbals USA thriving under his leadership, Michael Vosbein continues to champion the art of hand-crafted percussion. His journey—from a young drummer in New Orleans to a leading figure in the cymbal industry—is a story of passion, persistence, and a deep respect for tradition.

For drummers seeking more than just an instrument, but a piece of history and craftsmanship, Bosphorus Cymbals, under the visionary leadership of Michael Vosbein, remains the gold standard.

The 3-6 year old students from Kıymet Yıldız Preschool visited Melisa Karan Art Center and were introduced to the piano, violin, guitar, and drums for the first time through interactive games.

Melisa Karan, the owner of Melisa Karan Art Center and a music educator, emphasized the importance of early exposure to music for children and stated, “The earlier they start, the more successful they will be in their future artistic lives. Through this method, not only do the children get to know and discover themselves, but we also understand their interests and aptitudes for different instruments. This helps us guide them more effectively. First, we introduce and explain the instruments to them. They have the opportunity to touch and explore the instruments. Then, we introduce them to music through games and dance.”

Karan also expressed her gratitude to Kıymet Yıldız Preschool, its teachers, and parents for their sensitivity and appreciation of art, stating, “We worked together on this initiative. We do not charge any fees for this experience. I would like to emphasize that our doors are always open to other preschool children who would like to participate.”
